Three Basin residents who have demonstrated perseverance in the face of adversity are being recognized with this year’s Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship, supporting their pursuit of post-secondary education and career goals.
Established in 2017, the scholarship honours Neil Muth, Columbia Basin Trust’s President and Chief Executive Officer from 2005 through 2016. It reflects his values of self-motivation, lifelong learning and forging one’s own path.
This year, Jasmine Burrows of South Slocan, Talus Josephson of Golden and Stefanie Soukeroff of Castlegar are being honoured by the Muth family.
“Even in the face of overwhelming challenge and hardship, these individuals have continued to believe in themselves and the potential for a better future,” said Cathy Muth, Neil’s wife. “Our family is grateful to them for sharing their stories. The resolve and hope Jasmine, Talus and Stefanie show in reaching for their dreams is inspiring—we wish them the very best.”
The Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship is awarded by the Muth family, administered by Columbia Basin Trust and made possible through donations from family, friends, local governments and organizations. This year’s recipients will share $10,000 in funding.
Jasmine Burrows

Jasmine Burrows of South Slocan is pursuing studies in the social services field, guided by a strong commitment to supporting individuals and communities facing challenges. Recognized for her resilience, thoughtful perspective and dedication to personal growth, she is building toward a career focused on making a positive difference.
“Overcoming adversity has taught me perseverance, adaptability and the importance of believing in myself, even during difficult times. Receiving the Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship is incredibly meaningful because it helps remove financial barriers so I can focus on my education and future goals. This support is an investment in my potential, and it motivates me to continue working hard toward a career where I can have a positive impact on others.”
Talus Josephson

Talus Josephson of Golden is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, driven by a commitment to building a more sustainable future and supporting those around him. Recognized for his determination, leadership and strong work ethic, he is working toward a career focused on improving energy systems and creating positive change for both his community and future generations.
“I would like to sincerely thank the Muth family and Columbia Basin Trust for choosing me as a recipient for this award, and for making this scholarship possible. Financial struggle is often closely tied to childhood adversity, so supporting students who are working to overcome these barriers and break family cycles can have impacts far beyond easing financial pressures. For me, this scholarship helps cover the costs of studying and living away from home and allows me to continue pursuing my degree, with the goal of building a more stable future for the next generation of my family.”
Stefanie Soukeroff

Stefanie Soukeroff of Castlegar is pursuing advanced studies in science and health care, building on a strong foundation in human services and a clear commitment to helping others. Recognized for her resilience, academic excellence and determination, she is working toward a career in medicine focused on providing compassionate, holistic care.
“I am deeply honoured to receive the Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship and grateful to the Muth family for their generosity. As a former youth in government care, I know how powerful support can be in building a better future. I have completed both a Social Service Worker Certificate and a Human Services Diploma, and I am continuing my studies in mathematics and science while pursuing Medical Laboratory Assistant training. My long-term goal is to attend medical school and become an emergency physician. This scholarship allows me to keep moving toward that goal, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities it creates.”
