Construction is officially under way on a new multi-unit housing project in Nakusp that will add six rental homes for low‑ and moderate‑income households in the community.

Located at 915 Highway 23 North, the two-storey building is being developed by Columbia Basin Trust as part of its expanded efforts to support housing development in communities across the Columbia Basin. Once complete, the building will be owned and operated by Arrow and Slocan Lakes Community Services, a local non-profit organization with experience providing and managing community housing in Nakusp.
In recent years, housing shortages have intensified across the region, particularly in smaller and rural communities where limited local resources and capacity can make it challenging to advance complex, cost-efficient housing projects.
“Access to safe, secure housing is foundational to healthy and resilient communities,” said Johnny Strilaeff, President and CEO of Columbia Basin Trust. “By taking a more active role in development, the Trust can help move projects forward while working with local partners who will provide long-term housing solutions for their communities.”

The new residential building will include a mix of one- and two-bedroom homes, including one fully wheelchair-accessible unit. The project features energy-efficient design and construction, along with a rooftop solar array, supporting long-term affordability through lower heating and cooling costs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“This project responds directly to the need for affordable, secure rental housing in Nakusp,” said Tim Payne, Executive Director of Arrow and Slocan Lakes Community Services. “As a local organization with experience owning and managing community housing, we know how important it is to provide well‑run, long‑term homes for residents. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with Columbia Basin Trust on a project that will make a real difference in our community.”
Columbia Basin Trust is managing the construction of the project, with North Mountain Construction of Nelson awarded the construction contract. The homes are expected to be ready for occupancy in spring 2027.
