Columbia Basin Trust (the Trust) is excited to announce the opening of its new office in Nakusp. The building replaces the Trust’s previous leased space and provides a modern, sustainable workplace that reflects its long-term commitment to the community.
“Nakusp is where the Trust opened its first office in 1999, and this new building reflects the long-term relationship we have with the community,” said Johnny Strilaeff, President and CEO of Columbia Basin Trust. “It’s an investment that brings together sustainability, accessibility and local expertise, and it creates a welcoming space for our staff to continue working with residents, organizations and partners across the region.”
The new two-storey office sets a benchmark for energy efficiency and sustainability, exceeding energy design expectations and achieving Step 4 of the BC Energy Step Code. The building includes 38 high-efficiency 450-watt solar panels and incorporates significant volumes of wood products throughout the structure, canopy and exterior.

The building was designed by Studio 9 Architecture and constructed by North Mountain Construction, both Nelson-based, reflecting a high standard of craftsmanship, sustainability and careful execution.
The space also meets BC Building Code accessibility standards, including wheelchair-accessible parking, sidewalks with curb let-downs, and automatic door openers. When complete, the landscaping will feature FireSmart and drought-tolerant plants to minimize water use.
Together, these design features reduce environmental impact, improve accessibility and create a welcoming, efficient space to serve the community.
The Nakusp office is located at 83 Nelson Avenue North and serves as a local point of connection where residents, organizations and partners can meet with Trust staff and learn about the Trust’s programs and initiatives across the Arrow Lakes and surrounding area. The Trust also operates offices in Castlegar, Cranbrook and Golden.
