Columbia Basin Trust officially broke ground today on its new office at 83 Nelson Avenue N in Nakusp. The new location reinforces the Trust’s long-term commitment to the community. Construction will begin in April, with occupancy expected in spring 2026.
“Breaking ground on our new office in Nakusp is not just about construction—it’s about strengthening our connection to this community,” said Johnny Strilaeff, President and CEO, Columbia Basin Trust. “We opened our first office here 26 years ago, and today, we’re building on that foundation to create a lasting presence that will serve both our staff and the region for years to come.”
Nelson-based North Mountain Construction was awarded the contract following a competitive RFP process last fall.
Designed by Nelson-based Studio 9 Architecture + Planning, the new office building will set a benchmark for energy efficiency, sustainability and accessibility. Features will include:
- Meeting BC Energy Step Code 3, with the potential to achieve Step Code 4.
- Incorporating significant volumes of wood products, including the main structure, canopy and exterior.
- Featuring a 20kW solar array system with 45 high-efficiency panels covering the entire roof to reduce energy consumption.
- Meeting 2024 BC Building Code accessibility standards, including wheelchair-accessible parking, let-down sidewalks, automatic door openers, accessible kitchens, washrooms and showers, and an incline wheelchair lift.
The Trust has three other offices in Castlegar, Cranbrook and Golden.
