Construction is underway on two fibre optic projects that will expand the Trust’s regional broadband network by 185 km and greatly improve connectivity in Slocan Valley and South Country.
These Connecting BC projects are funded by local governments, the Province of BC and Columbia Basin Trust.
The Slocan Valley fibre project involves a 125-km expansion of the regional broadband network from the Playmor Junction to Shoreholme, just north of Nakusp. The route will be a high-speed launching platform for Internet Service Providers wishing to offer their services to residents or businesses in the area.
The South Country fibre project involves a 60-km expansion of the regional broadband network from Jaffray south to the US border at Roosville. The project will enhance connectivity for underserved residents in the Roosville Valley and facilitate interconnection of the network to the Seattle Internet Exchange.
Both projects will use a variety of installation methods including underground, marine and aerial. Regardless of methodology, the Trust will employ best practice techniques to minimize or eliminate impacts to residents, wildlife, the environment and locations of historical significance.
The goal is to complete both projects by March 2023.
