Our climate is changing. Temperatures and precipitation in the Basin are becoming more extreme and increasing the risk of flooding, drought and wildfire.
Basin communities have told us that one of their priorities is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for and adapt to our changing climate. This is why the Trust has developed a new Climate Change initiative, which is based on one of the goals in our Environment Strategic Plan.
To shape the program, we connected with a range of individuals and organizations in the Basin to help ensure the program will meet the needs of Basin communities.
The new initiative will build upon the success of our previous work in climate change: the Communities Adapting to Climate Change Initiative (2007 to 2014) and Carbon Neutral Kootenays (2009 to 2012). Through these, we have built awareness, provided information, supported science and developed tools that have helped communities and the Basin adapt to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
