Past Workshops

Develop your capacity as a facilitator, leader and communicator and learn how to plan and design effective agendas that engage your participants. This interactive workshop will explore the qualities of good facilitation and skills you can utilize to better understand and connect with your audience.

Michelle Laurie is an experienced communicator and facilitator, whose experience ranges from working with small non-profits, governments at all levels, and international organizations.

This workshop was held in Rossland on Tuesday, October 18.

This workshop will explore the basics of board governance for non-profits, including duties of non-profit boards and individual directors, the foundational documents and agreements that guide the work of effective Boards and staff, tools for effective, mission-focused meetings, and methods for decision making. This workshop will include time for discussion and questions pertaining to your personal experience as a board member.

Heather Rennebohm’s experience includes serving as a board member and Executive Director, as well as an economic development officer. She has deep roots in the non-profit community and loves supporting the personal and professional development of others.

This workshop was held in Sparwood on Tuesday, October 25.

Is your group wondering “Where do we go from here?” or “What should we do next with our very limited resources?” Strategic planning is a process that helps you address these common concerns in an effective and practical way. This workshop will provide real-life examples, checklists, templates and other tools to help you develop a plan that will get your organization headed in the right direction.

Val Mayes is an experienced consultant, instructor and skilled strategic planner with a depth of non-profit experience.

This workshop was held in Nelson on Wednesday, October 26.

You have identified a real need or opportunity that you would like to address in your community or organization. How do you build a project to do this? A strong plan will support the success of your project. Strong project implementation teams have effective processes for working together and a commitment to engaging partners, funders, clients and the community.

This workshop will support participants in learning:

  • Methods to identify and prioritize needs and opportunities in your community or organization
  • How to develop a strong project plan, from concept to completion, in alignment with your goals
  • Why community engagement is important
  • Approaches and key considerations for engaging your community and building support for your project

Kel Saldern is an experienced community engagement professional with many years of project development experience.

This workshop was held in Salmo on Tuesday, November 1.

This engaging workshop will support you with marketing and communication tools and strategies that you can use to help build your non-profit brand, tell the story of your non-profit, and raise awareness of your organization. It will include examples of traditional approaches and digital/social media and ideas of how to choose the right tool for your organization or audience. Participants will be supported in identifying their target audience, developing a brand narrative for their non-profit, and generating ideas for connective marketing campaigns.

Zan Comerford has almost a decade of experience working with Basin non-profits and businesses, and speaks social media strategy in her sleep. She is the head of a Basin-based marketing company, and has also taught for the Basin Business Advisors and Selkirk College.

This workshop was held in Cranbrook on Monday, November 7.

Social media can be a powerful tool to communicate the mission and message of your non-profit, connect with your community, recruit volunteers, raise funds and inspire action. This interactive workshop will support you to develop and execute an impactful social media strategy for your non-profit and track metrics, as well as providing tips on how to save time, stay organized and on-budget. It will include a brief introduction to Canva – a useful tool for creating digital content. Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm stories of their organization to share, create reels and ask questions specific to their non-profit.

This workshop was held in Fernie on Tuesday, November 8.

This workshop was held in Valemount on Thursday, November 10.

This workshop provides an overview of key financial management topics that are critical to non-profit operations, including an introduction to basic terminology, different types of financial statements, the various components of bookkeeping, and some of the unique challenges and scenarios that come up when managing the finances of a non-profit. Having a great financial management system in place can help you to save time, allowing reports to be produced with transparency and peace of mind.

Kyla Lam is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) who is passionate about educating individuals and organizations. She excels in helping people to better understand their numbers and supporting them in managing their cash flow effectively.

This workshop was held in Invermere on Tuesday, November 15.

This workshop will support you in using Canva to create captivating promotional materials for your non-profit, including posters, social media posts, and presentations. Bring your non-profit logo and learn how to use it impactfully to help boost the recognition of your non-profit.

This workshop will cover:

  • How Canva can be used to to promote the brand of your non-profit
  • How Canva can be used to create capitivating marketing touchpoints that will elevate your non-profit
  • How Canva can be used to create and manage content that will build your presence on social media

Participants are encouraged to email their non-profit logo to nichola@pinkdogdesigns.com at least 5 days before the course starts.

Nichola Lytle is an instructor with the Digital Arts program at Selkirk College and designer/owner of Pinkdog Designs design agency out of Nelson BC. Nichola works together with businesses, non-profits, corporations and municipalities in creating digital communications that promote, engage and inspire.

This workshop was held in Slocan on Wednesday, November 16.

Staff and volunteers are very important to the success of your non-profit. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of Human Resources, including strategies for recruiting and retaining the right staff and volunteers for your organization. From job descriptions and postings, to simple onboarding tips, to understanding the Employment Standards Act and examples of what kind of HR policies may be helpful to have on the books, this workshop will be helpful both to volunteer-run organizations and ones with staff.

Nicole Morgan is an experienced HR professional, non-profit volunteer, and instructor at College of the Rockies. She created this workshop especially for Basin non-profits.
