The Trust, in partnership with College of the Rockies, Selkirk College and Okanagan College, is hosting a series of in-person workshops that could help build the knowledge and capacity of your non-profit. These workshops are for Basin non-profits and their staff and volunteers.

Grant Writing
Learn the basics of preparing grant applications or sharpen your skills through a step-by-step approach to the process. From developing the project idea to completing the details of the budget, this workshop will provide an outline to use to prepare clear, concise, comprehensive, and competitive grant applications.
A career working with and for non-profit societies has given Lynda Lafleur many opportunities to pursue funding. But the 16 years working for Columbia Basin Trust in the Naksup office put her on the receiving end of those funding applications. Lynda has also gained experience adjudicating grant applications for provincial and federal programs and likes to share what she has learned.
This in-person workshop took place in Nakusp on Tuesday, October 8.
Running the “Business” of a Non-Profit
Whether you sit on the Board of Directors or work as an Executive Director or Manager within your non-profit organization, this workshop will shed some light on what your role requires of you and how to approach your responsibilities. We will explore some key organizational principles and duties for running an effective and efficient organization. When you take care of the ‘business’ behind your Mission, the ‘business’ of your Mission will shine through.
Rona Park has been a community social service Executive for the past 20 years, and worked on the front-line for 17 years before that. She is now semi-retired and loves to share her professional experience and knowledge with others who are carrying on this important work. As a consultant, Rona offers a range of workshops related to Board Development, Strategic Planning, Policy Development, Systems Reviews, and most recently, Executive Coaching for new Executive Directors. Her very practical, hands-on, real-life approach to learning about the business of non-profits will inspire confidence in you and further ignite your passion for non-profit Board or management work.

Strategic Planning Workshop for Non-profit Boards and Directors
Join us for a fun, skill-building workshop designed specifically for non-profit boards and directors who are looking to enhance their strategic planning skills and understand how to integrate a balanced approach to their next strategic planning session.
This workshop is ideal for ED’s and board members who want to understand how to align their organization’s financial health with other components of the operations in order to ensure they meet their long-term strategic goals. By the end of the workshop, participants will have been provided with a comprehensive framework that will assist them to integrate financial stewardship goals within the not-for-profit environment starting today. We will also explore how to operationalize strategic goals to ensure operational objectives are completely aligned with the long term vision of the organization.
Carolyn Gibson is an entrepreneur with an extensive background in training and development who is a pillar of support for businesses in Revelstoke. From her first days as a consultant to becoming the driving force behind The Pines Business Development – her own advisory service dedicated to helping local business thrive-Carolyn has been on a remarkable journey. Carolyn’s true passion lies in nurturing aspiring entrepreneurs and helping them launch and elevate their businesses. For the past six years, Carolyn has partnered with Start-up Revelstoke, providing support, networking, mentoring, coaching, and training to a variety of clients.

Effective Communications for Non-Profits
Effective communication is key to the success of any Board or group. What skills can you develop to improve your effectiveness when communicating? How do you conduct difficult conversations so situations do not get out of control? Communications skills can help the Board become more effective and avoid troublesome conflict.
Frank Marino has over 25 years of HR experience, mostly in Health Care, both in the public and private sectors. Frank offers practical knowledge in all aspects of Human Resources and Administration. His style is to collaborate with a focus on strategic and operational priorities. Growing and investing in team capacity is one of Frank’s priorities. He most enjoys mentoring managers to become better leaders. In recent years Frank has provided HR Consulting services to small and medium sized organizations, from Strategic Planning, Board Development, and Conflict Resolution.

Marketing, Communications and Social Media
Provide non-profits with tools and strategies they can use to help build their brand, tell their stories and raise awareness of their organization, including examples of traditional approaches, digital, and social media, and ideas of how to choose the right tool for their organization or audience.
Zan Comerford has almost a decade of experience working with Basin non-profits and businesses, and speaks social media strategy in her sleep. She is the head of a Basin-based marketing company, and has also taught for the Basin Business Advisors and Selkirk College.
